Help create and spread holiday cheer all month long

Discovery Place Kids Rockingham

Discovery Place Kids-Rockingham is celebrating the holidays this December with lots of activities geared toward learning about different cultures and creating fun decorations along the way. Help your children feel festive all month long with visits to the Museum.

Special activities are scheduled throughout December to pay homage to all different holiday celebrations. On weekdays at 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., join us for themed events focused on Christmas.

  • Tuesdays & Thursdays- Letters to Santa: He’s making a list and checking it twice, so don’t miss out on writing a letter to Santa! When you’re done, drop it in our mailbox and we’ll be sure to deliver it to the North Pole.
  • Wednesdays & Fridays- Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree! The city of Latvia claims to be the home of history’s first decorated Christmas tree, back in 1510. Guests will learn about the evolution of Christmas trees and help construct one using some unusual building materials.

Get cooking on the weekends at our annual Gingerbread Workshop taking place at 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. on Saturdays and at 2:15 p.m. on Sundays. Using basic kitchen chemistry, we’ll whip up a gingerbread ornament for your tree.

On December 19 and 21, at 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. both days, kids can learn about the insects that may reside in many popular trees including holiday trees (eek!) in our Holiday Tree Critters special program. Plus, make a six-legged ornament to take home or leave on our tree.

Wrap up the year on December 31 with a special New Year’s at Noon program. The Museum will open at 9 a.m. on this special Monday to ring in the New Year. Countdown festivities begin at 11:45 a.m. as we blast off into 2019.

Check Out Special Winter Break Programs

Plus, this month we’ll be bugging out while school’s out with fun bug-themed events as part of our winter break program, Winter Wonder Bugs.

  • On December 26 and 28, check out A Bug’s Life-Cycles and learn to identify the various stages of a bug’s life – from egg to larva, from pupa to adult, every bug has an amazing journey.
  • On December 27, 29 and 30, visit the Museum and create your own Butterfly Masks.
