Cook up some science fun this month

Discovery Place Kids Huntersville

Discovery Place Kids-Huntersville is cooking up plenty of fun this month. Stop by and stir up some science by using items we all have in our own homes to discover different scientific properties. From chemical reactions to polymers and everything in between, mix and measure to create your own kitchen concoctions.

On weekdays, stop by the Town Hall Stage at 11:15 a.m. daily (plus an extra show at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesdays) for story times and hands-on activities that celebrate the kitchen as a science laboratory.

Tuesdays & Thursdays- Edible Experiments: It’s all about science we can see, touch, smell and taste. Join us for the reading of If you Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff, then conduct experiments with a scrumptious twist.

Wednesdays & Fridays- Kitchen (un)Confidential: Dive into the deepest depths of our kitchen cabinets to use ingredients we have on hand to do some explosive experiments.

Plus, mark your calendars to bring the family to enjoy these special weekend activities, which start at the Town Hall Stage with a special story at 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Saturdays and at 1:45 p.m. on Sundays.

January 5 & 6 – Edible Engineering: Read Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty then use a variety of edible materials to design, build and test structures of your own creation.

January 12 & 13 – Mixing and Measuring: Read The Little Red Hen (makes a pizza) then grab spoons and bowls as we mix and measure to stir up an amazing creation.

January 19 & 20 – Phases of Matter: Celebrate National Popcorn day and explore the three most common states of matter-- with food! First, learn about our favorite movie snack by joining us to read The Popcorn Book by Tomie de Paola. Then examine solids, liquids and gasses and conduct experiments to observe changes from one state of matter to another.

January 26 & 27 – Science of Flavor: Why does food taste certain ways? Is there a reason why we make a funny face if we taste something sour? Read Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty, then use the scientific method to make predictions about taste.

Extra fun for everyone

In addition to celebrating kitchen concoctions this month, Discovery Place Kids-Huntersville will also hold special programs on the following days:

January 15 – National Hat Day: Hats off to National Hat Day! Don your favorite crazy, funny, cute or silly hat and come celebrate! Read Whose Hat is This? then explore the different hats people can wear.

January 18 – Winnie the Pooh Day: Today we celebrate everyone’s favorite “silly old bear.” Bring your favorite “stuffed with fluff” bear or other animal and journey with us through the Hundred Acre Woods.

January 21 - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: Dr. King worked hard for peace. He dreamed of a day when people could get along and treat each other with kindness. Join us for a special story and activities to celebrate this hero.

January 29 - National Puzzle Day: Don’t be puzzled, today is all about celebrating puzzles. From jigsaws to crosswords, nothing is off limits as we play around with some of our favorite brain teasers.

The special programs start at the Town Hall Stage with a special story at 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on the day listed.
